What is IndexNow?

IndexNow is an open protocol for telling search engines that a URL changed. Instead of waiting days for a crawler to notice a new post or an updated price, your site sends the URL to an IndexNow endpoint and the engines know right away. Microsoft Bing and Yandex launched it in 2021. Today Seznam.cz, Naver, Yep and Amazonbot accept it as well, and a submission to one of them is shared with all the others.

IndexNow is a notification, not a guarantee. The engines still decide whether to crawl and index each page, but a fresh signal usually gets new and changed pages crawled much sooner than waiting for discovery.

How to use IndexNow in 3 steps

  1. Generate a key. Any string of 8 to 128 letters, digits and dashes works. The Generate button above makes a random 32-character one.
  2. Host the key file. Upload a UTF-8 text file named after the key, containing only the key, to your site root (https://yoursite.com/your-key.txt). This proves you own the site. A key file in a subfolder only covers URLs inside that folder.
  3. Submit your URLs. Paste up to 100 URLs from the same site and press Submit. We check the key file first, then send the list and show each engine's response code.

The IndexNow API

The IndexNow API is a single HTTP endpoint. For one URL, a GET request is enough: https://api.indexnow.org/indexnow?url=URL&key=KEY. For a batch, POST a JSON body with your host, key, key location and up to 10,000 URLs from that host:

POST https://api.indexnow.org/indexnow
Content-Type: application/json; charset=utf-8

{
  "host": "www.example.org",
  "key": "your-key",
  "keyLocation": "https://www.example.org/your-key.txt",
  "urlList": [
    "https://www.example.org/url1",
    "https://www.example.org/folder/url2"
  ]
}

Every engine accepts the same body on its own endpoint, for example https://www.bing.com/indexnow for Bing and https://yandex.com/indexnow for Yandex. This tool sends the same request to api.indexnow.org and to each engine so you can see who answered what.

IndexNow response codes

CodeMeaning
200OK: the URLs were received.
202Accepted: received, the key file is still being checked.
400Bad request: the format is invalid.
403Forbidden: the key file was not found or does not match the key.
422Unprocessable: the URLs do not belong to the host, or the key does not match the protocol.
429Too many requests: the engine suspects spam.

Bing IndexNow and Google

Bing is the biggest engine on IndexNow, and its index also feeds AI assistants that search the web, so a fast Bing pickup matters more than it used to. Bing Webmaster Tools shows the URLs it received through IndexNow (see how to submit your website to Bing). Google is the exception: it does not use IndexNow at all. For Google, the path is URL Inspection and Request Indexing in Search Console, one URL at a time. Read more in our IndexNow vs IndexMachine comparison.

IndexMachine covers both sides on autopilot. Its Chrome extension clicks Google's own Request Indexing in your Search Console every day, and every other engine gets unlimited IndexNow submissions from a key we generate for you (upload one file once). No lists to copy, no link farms. Of 1,841 pages IndexMachine requested, 1,418 (77%) were on Google, typically by our first check about 3 days after the request. FAQ

What is IndexNow?

IndexNow is a free, open protocol that lets a website tell search engines the moment a URL is added, updated or deleted, instead of waiting for a crawler to find the change. Microsoft Bing and Yandex launched it in 2021; Seznam.cz, Naver, Yep and Amazonbot accept it too.

Is IndexNow free?

Yes. The protocol and every engine's endpoint are free. You only need a key and a text file on your site that proves you own it. This tool is free too, up to 100 URLs per run.

How many URLs can I submit with the IndexNow API?

Up to 10,000 URLs per request, all on the same host. This free tool sends up to 100 per run and a few runs per site per day. IndexMachine submits every page of your sites with no limit.

Does IndexNow work for Google?

No. Google does not use IndexNow. To get a page into Google, request indexing with URL Inspection in Google Search Console. IndexMachine does that for you every day with Google's own Request Indexing in your Search Console, and covers the IndexNow engines in the same run.

Do I have to submit to Bing and Yandex separately?

No. Engines that accept IndexNow share every submission with each other, so one request to api.indexnow.org or to any single engine reaches all of them. This tool also sends the request to each engine's own endpoint so you can see each answer code.
