How to create a sitemap in 3 steps

  1. Enter your home page. example.com is enough; if it redirects to https://www.example.com/, the crawl starts there and the sitemap covers that host.
  2. Let the generator crawl. It follows the links on every page, stays on your site, obeys robots.txt and checks each page the way Googlebot would: status, noindex and canonical. Up to 500 pages, 4 at a time.
  3. Download sitemap.xml. Upload it to your site root, add a Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console. Then test the live file with the sitemap finder and checker.

What goes into the sitemap, and what stays out

A sitemap should list only canonical pages that answer 200 and that Google may index. Redirects, noindex pages and duplicates tell Google your sitemap can't be trusted, so this XML sitemap generator leaves them out and tells you which URLs it skipped and why:

What the crawler findsIn the sitemap?
200 HTML pageListed
RedirectLeft out; the page it redirects to is crawled and listed
noindex (meta robots, meta googlebot or X-Robots-Tag)Left out
Canonical points to another URLLeft out; the canonical URL is listed
Blocked by robots.txtLeft out, never fetched
404, 410, 5xxLeft out
Images, PDFs, CSS, feeds and other filesSkipped

Tracking parameters such as utm_source are stripped, so one page is never listed twice. Links marked rel="nofollow" and links on pages with a nofollow directive are not followed. Only URLs on the exact host and protocol you start from are listed, because a sitemap may only contain URLs from its own site.

lastmod: real dates only

Google uses the lastmod date to decide what to recrawl, but only when it is consistently accurate. The generator takes lastmod from each page's Last-Modified header and drops it when the server simply stamps every response with the current time, which many dynamic sites do. You can turn lastmod off with one click. The file has no priority or changefreq tags: Google ignores both.

Do you need a sitemap generator at all?

Many platforms already create one: WordPress publishes /wp-sitemap.xml, Yoast SEO and Rank Math publish /sitemap_index.xml, and Shopify, Wix and Squarespace generate /sitemap.xml automatically. Run the sitemap finder first to see if you have one. This generator is for static sites, custom builds and sites whose sitemap is broken or missing. It also works as a crawl test: a page you expected that is missing from the result has no internal links pointing to it, and Google will struggle to find it too.

For sites with more than 500 pages, generate the sitemap from your CMS or framework (most have a plugin or a built-in route) and split it into several files under a sitemap index once you pass 50,000 URLs.

A sitemap lists every URL for search engines. To give AI assistants a short map of your key pages instead, use the llms.txt generator.

From sitemap to indexed pages

Submitting a sitemap tells Google your pages exist. It does not make Google index them, and new sites often see most of their sitemap sit at Discovered, currently not indexed. The fastest way out is Request Indexing in Search Console, one URL at a time.

IndexMachine does that on autopilot. It picks up every page in your sitemap and presses Google's own Request Indexing in your Search Console for every new and unindexed page, every day, using your full daily quota on every site. Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver get every new URL through unlimited IndexNow. No link farms. Of 1,841 pages IndexMachine requested, 1,418 (77%) were on Google, typically by our first check about 3 days after the request. FAQ

How do I create an XML sitemap for free?

Enter your home page above and press Generate sitemap. The generator crawls your site the way a search engine does, keeps every indexable page it reaches and writes a valid sitemap.xml you can download or copy. Upload it to your site root, add a Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console.

How many pages can this sitemap generator crawl?

Up to 500 pages per run, crawled 4 at a time for up to about 45 seconds. Most small and medium sites finish well inside that. Bigger sites should generate the sitemap from their CMS or framework, which knows every URL without crawling.

Where do I upload sitemap.xml?

To the root of your site, so it loads at https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. A sitemap only covers URLs in its own folder and below, so the root covers everything. Then add Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml to robots.txt and submit the URL in the Sitemaps report of Search Console.

Does the generator respect robots.txt?

Yes. It obeys the rules for its own crawler (IndexMachineBot, or the * group when robots.txt does not name it) and also leaves out any URL that robots.txt blocks for Googlebot, because a sitemap should only list pages Google may crawl.

Will a sitemap get my pages indexed?

A sitemap helps Google find your pages; it does not make Google index them. To move pages from Discovered or Crawled, currently not indexed to indexed, request indexing in Search Console. IndexMachine does that every day for every page in your sitemap that Google hasn't indexed.
